Yearout Energy Services Awarded $13.9 Million Performance Contract for the Metropolitan Detention Center
Bernalillo County has awarded a $13.9 million guaranteed energy performance contract to Yearout Energy Services, a leading homegrown energy services provider in New Mexico, to implement energy efficiency and infrastructure improvements at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC). Bernalillo County initially engaged Yearout Energy Services in July of 2016 to perform an Investment Grade Audit of the MDC with the intent to identify and develop measures that would allow the County to leverage the energy and operational savings to fund essential facility capital improvements.
The MDC is a 500,000 square-foot correctional facility located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The MDC was originally constructed in 2002 in multiple phases and designed to house up to 2,220 inmates. The majority of the equipment serving the facility is original and has met the end of its useful life. This elevated the need for critical facility improvements to ensure the County could continue to provide a safe and secure environment for inmates and staff while improving the operational performance of the facility.
The approved project will encompass a comprehensive LED lighting upgrade, replacement of the aged HVAC equipment, a complete overhaul of the energy management system, repairs and replacement to the roof, repairs to the sanitation system, enhancements to the landfill gas heating system, and the installation of a 1.5-megawatt solar photovoltaic system. The project is expected to reduce the annual energy consumption of the facility by 32% and offset the annual utility cost to operate the facility by 47%. Implementation is set to begin in early 2018.
